Attorney Elia Burgos earned a Bachelor of Arts and a Juris Doctorate from the University of Puerto Rico. She recently graduated with a master’s in legal studies from Cleveland Marshall College of Law.

Attorney Burgos has dedicated her 22-year legal career to the defense of the indigents. Her journey began at a private health law firm, where she started as a paralegal and later became an associate attorney. However, she soon realized that her talents and passion were best suited in serving marginalized communities. This led her to a 16-year tenure as a Public Defender in Puerto Rico, where she started as a juvenile defense attorney and continued to defend adult felony cases.

Elia is licensed to practice law in the State of Ohio, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the District Court of Puerto Rico, and the First Circuit of Boston. Attorney Burgos is our first Spanish-speaking attorney. She joined the Summit Legal Defenders office in January of 2024.
